About Dru
A little about me...
I am currently the Financial Specialist of the School of Business Administration, University of Mississippi. I have held multiple leadership positions including:
Student Government Association President (Delgado Community College, New Orleans)
College-Wide representative for the Board of Regents (Louisiana)
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Omega Nu chapter president (DCC)
Regional officer with the title of Louisiana Representative for PTK worldwide (DCC)
Senior Leader of the Chancellor's Leadership Class (University of Mississippi)
Ambassador/CEO of the Business School (UM)
Foundation Student Representative at the Business School (UM)
UM Banking Symposium Student Representative (UM)
Clean-Up-the Grove (UM)
Clean-Up-NOLA event coordinator and leader for Mayor LaToya Cantrelle (New Orleans)
Recently, I had been awarded "Who's Who" at the University of Mississippi. I also been worked with Mrs. Kim Phillips at the University of Mississippi as one of the Business School’s CEOs to represent students of the Business School and to help incoming freshmen and transfer students have a better understanding of life at Ole Miss and how to integrate properly while making new connections.
As a student leader I went out of my way to advocate for the students of my local community by leading clean-up events, senior home events, partnerships with the LaSPCA where we brought dogs onto campus during finals to help destress students, and much more. When I became president of the SGA, I was able to work with community leaders such as Senator Bill Cassidy, Governor John Bel Edwards, and Mayor LaToya Cantrelle and I was also able to develop a new filing and organizational practice, saving the SGA $30,000 per year in contracted labor expenses to apply towards buying free rentable laptops for all students at Delgado Community College.
I have received multiple scholarships at The University of Mississippi to attend full-time at no cost to me. I have also received multiple awards such as Lyceum Scholar, PTK Membership Recruitment, PTK Golden Key Recipient, and much more.
It is my hope that my legacy left behind will be one that encourages others to lend a helping hand to all those that are in need of help. Being a part of the Chancellor’s Leadership Class has not only opened up multiple doors for me (such as becoming a CEO for the School of Business at Ole Miss) but it was also a wonderful way for me to integrate myself on campus after transferring from New Orleans. I was able to learn about leading, accountability, and integrity from some of the most prominent community leaders in Oxford and important figures on campus. It is my passion to help guide incoming students on how to better acclimate on campus - especially because I was so nervous transferring to UM. I came here not knowing anyone and now after only two semesters I have made many friends and also find myself volunteering on campus as much as possible.
To be an effective leader you must lead a well-balanced life. Leadership is about keeping your team focused and motivated towards their goal - whatever that may be. So if someone is needing help with how to study for their classes, I know that as a 4.0 student I will be able to set them up for success. If someone is looking for new opportunities to volunteer on campus, I have found many different avenues already and I love being able to share my experiences. It is my hope that I can lead by example, and have others be encouraged to treat their fellow rebels the same.
Having come from a small town down on the bayou with only 15 students in my high-school graduating class, I now have this perpetual feeling of self-confidence that I did not have before. 22% of high-schoolers in my parish (the highest in the state) drop-out of high-school with only 17% of graduates achieving a Bachelor’s degree or higher (the second lowest in the state). It is the culture back home to go straight into the oil field or shrimping/crabbing industry. I have always been infused with honor knowing that I can represent my family by giving my optimum effort so that in the future I can help support them as well as myself.
By joining the Ole Miss family with the help of the scholarships I have gained, I have made my family proud and, more importantly, I have found something within myself that drives me to continually strive for academic excellence and explore the many creative outlets of my new community and my mind. This opportunity has allowed me the gift of making incredible connections and friends around the nation, to partner with brilliant non-profit organizations, to keep me motivated in my studies, create beautiful research projects with the intellectual minds in the Chancellor’s Leadership class, and so much more.
